Making A Feathered Friend

We made a bird craft together the other day that was pretty fun.

We started out by painting two different sized Styrofoam balls. A medium sized one for the body, and a smaller one for the head. My boy chose to make a blue bird, so that is what we went with. When the balls were painted we set them aside and let them dry for a while.

Then we put them together by sticking a toothpick into the body, and then pushing the head onto the other side of the stick. We added googly eyes and created a beak with a bit of orange construction paper. Both were attached with regular ol' glue.

Then I let him choose some feathers for the tail. These were great to attach since you can just poke them into the Styrofoam. Same deal for the wings.

We used pipe cleaners for the legs and feet. I clipped a little bit off the end and reattached it by twisting it to make the second 'toe' on the foot.

As a final touch, he chose to add a fluffy feather on the top of the bird's head. He loved his new pet and played with it the rest of the day.
